St.
Mark Religious Education Program
Religious
education is provided for all registered members of St. Mark Parish. Programs
are designed to fulfill the Church's responsibility to continue the mission
of Jesus to proclaim and teach about the kingdom of God. Programs are
presented for adults as well as both the religious instruction needs of
the students in public school and in the sacramental needs of all our
students in public and parochial school.
Registration for children in public schools is held
in August. Classes begin in September and end in April.
The pre-school and kindergarten age
program for three to five year-olds is held on Sunday mornings during
the school year during the 9:30 AM Mass. This is a structured weekly program
consisting of lessons about God using the Old Testament Scripture stories,
lessons on Jesus from the New Testament stories, and lessons on what it
means to be a part of God's family, our friends and our Church. Young
children discover God's love through their world, themselves, their families
and friends. Each lesson includes a creative craft, a story page for class
and home use, and a page for parental involvement.
The elementary and junior high school
age classes for pupils in public school are as follows:
Grades 1-6 classes
in English: Wednesday, 4:00 to 5:00 P.M.
Grades 7-8 classes
in English: Wednesday, 7:00 to 8:00 P.M.
Grades K-6 classes in Spanish: Thursday, 6:15 to 7:30 P.M.
Children
who have been in Religious Education for at least one year, have had good
attendance but have not been able to receive Reconciliation or Eucharist
(First Communion) according to our normal schedule, are enrolled in a
Special Sacrament class. This class will prepare them to receive
First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
Our religious education program for ninth through
the Confirmation year (either 11th or 12th grade) is provided on Monday
evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. These classes concentrate on religious
instruction in a classroom setting. The program also provides occasional
opportunities for special celebrations of the Eucharist and the Sacrament
of Reconciliation. A yearly retreat is held on each grade level.
Special students, including the physically
challenged are instructed in religion and prepared for the reception of
the sacraments by a city-wide director. For more information and registration
